Faculty trust eroded after University of Akron layoffs
“An arbitrator ruled Sept. 18 that the administration was justified in taking the action that it did, invoking a clause in the union contract that allows for layoffs without consideration of faculty rank or status in the case of a catastrophic circumstance. The result was binding, and it resulted in about 67 faculty remaining laid off and losing severance pay. Others had opted to retire to come off the list.”
